Why do older hearses have exterior lanterns?

It wasn't uncommon to see lighted lamps on the side of older hearses. It's a throwback to the original lanterns that were on horse drawn carriages and coaches. These lights are also called opera lights, and are not only decorative, but served the function of drawing attention to the procession of the deceased.
