What is an effigy?

An effigy is a sculpted figure meant to represent a deceased individual. It is usually found on grave monuments, in the form of a recumbent figure. It usually depicts the deceased in an eternal resting position, sometimes with their hands folded together in prayer and indicating that they are awaiting resurrection. Often times, a husband and wife are portrayed lying side by side. A significant official may be depicted with their items of power and authority or clothed according to their social class or rank.
