What is a Death Doula?

You’ve probably heard of a birth doula, who is an experienced individual who provides continuous support to individuals before, during, and after childbirth. A death doula, also referred to as an end-of-life doula, end-of-life coach, death midwife, or death coach, is a professional who offers support to individuals who are nearing the end of their lives and their loved ones. They provide emotional and physical assistance, educate about the dying process, help with preparations, and offer guidance during the grieving process. While they are not licensed to provide medical assistance, they play a crucial role in advocating for the wishes and needs of the dying person. Additionally, they offer a compassionate presence and actively listen to both the needs of the dying individual and those who are grieving around them.
